The police said Giridhar Lal, 50, his wife Shila Lal, 45, and their daughter Kiran, 14, were killed in the morning when a portion of the dilapidated building collapsed at Bedford Lane near Ripon Street in central Kolkata.

Two engines of fire brigade were pressed for the rescue operation.

“All three bodies have been recovered. A person who got trapped in the building was rescued and hospitalised,” Deputy Commissioner (South Division) Jawed Shamim said.

The police said the deceased were sleeping when the portion came down on them.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Lok Sabha member Mohammed Salim visited the spot.

People in the neighbourhood alleged that the building was in a bad state for a long time but the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) did not take appropriate action.
