Abu Dhabi : Maintaining its position as one of the fastest growing airports in the region, the international airport here has posted a massive growth in passenger handling and aircraft movement, WAM news agency reported Tuesday.
The Abu Dhabi International Airport, which is an important hub for the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s national carrier Etihad Airways, registered a robust 32.7 percent growth in passenger inflow and 16.9 percent growth in aircraft movement, according to data released for February.
The airport handled 648,301 passengers in the said month compared to 488,453 for the same month in 2007.
During the 12 months between February 2007 and the same month of the current year a total of 7,272,134 passengers were handled, an increase of 34 percent that of the previous year.
“The rapid and sustained growth of our number one customer and the UAE’s national airline, Etihad Airways, continues to be a key factor in the increase of traffic,” said Rudy Vercelli, newly appointed CEO of the airport.
He also attributed the growth to the nine new destinations added to the network in the last 12 month.
“In addition, it has also been noted that traffic coming to Abu Dhabi for business conferences and exhibitions is increasing rapidly and is having a clear effect on the profile of passengers through our airports,” Vercelli added.
