A brief statement says the airman was on a patrol around noon when the attack occurred Thursday in a central area of the capital.

The identity of the slain airman has not been released pending notification of relatives.

The death raises to at least 4,012 members of the U.S. military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003. That’s according to an Associated Press count.
