New Delhi : Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat has warned the United Progressive Alliance government against going ahead with the Military
Collaboration Agreement with the United States and losing the country’s stature of a non-aligned nation.
“Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru played a key role in the Non-Aligned Movement. Now, the agreement would make India a military partner of Washington. This would only result in the country losing the status of a non-aligned nation,” Karat said Thursday while addressing a public meeting on the conclusion of CPM’s 19th Congress held in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, a leading english daily reported here Friday.
The Congress party should follow the path of its leaders to pursue an independent foreign policy.
Though the government, headed by the Congress, promised to pursue such a policy, it was making efforts to enter into a strategic alliance with the US.
The CPI(M) would mobilize people to undo the agreement.
“Our opposition is not against the US as a country or its people. It is against the US government that is putting pressure on India on the military deal and economic policies that are detrimental for the people of our country,” he said.
Exhorting party men to involve deeply in strengthening the organisation, he said, “Our party will struggle to see to it that the people got relief from problems such as price rise and unemployment.”
