New Delhi : Indian capital Delhi’s Traffic Police suspended 98 policemen filmed on video accepting bribes from private bus operators Friday, local newspaper the Hindustan Times reported Sunday.
The policemen were suspended after a vigilance department identified the policemen in the videotapes, in line with an order from the Delhi High Court.
The policemen were filmed taking money in a sting operation carried out by Chetan Prakash, a property dealer, after a bus owner approached him for help.
The shots were taken at 23 traffic intersections between September and December last year in Delhi.
“The cops used to demand money from the bus owners for releasing their impounded buses and also a daily entry fee. Every bus in the capital has to pass through one of these entry points everyday,” said Prakash.
This is not the first time Prakash conducted a sting operation and submitted it in the Delhi High Court. In the last three years 59 policemen have been suspended after Prakash filmed them taking bribe from bootleggers, the report said.
