Abu Dhabi : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has released the second instalment of the $4 million assistance to a UN food aid programme in the Gaza Strip, WAM news agency reported.

Karen Abu Zayd, commissioner-general of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), said: “UNRWA is thankful to UAE’s President Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed for the generous gift.”

The fund is being given by the Khalifa Bin Zayed Foundation.

“The money will help us feed thousands of refugee families in Gaza,” Karen said, adding, UAE has been a strong supporter of the UNRWA.

The UN agency has recently received $3 million from the UAE government, mainly to provide food to the 1.1 million refugees in Gaza. Over 80 percent of the population in Gaza is dependent on the UN for food.

On April 1, the agency signed an agreement with the Khalifa Bin Zayed Foundation for procuring tinned meat, flour, sunflower oil and milk powder for supplying it to the refugees.
