BJP wants quotas in minority institutions too

New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court judgement upholding 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in institutions of higher education, but with a rider.

BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad sought time to study the judgement in detail. In the meantime, he demanded implementation of the principle of reservation in minority institutions as well.

“The BJP welcomes the judgment. But since it is a judgement by a constitution bench of five honourable judges, the party would like to study the judgement in detail and give a studied response.

“The BJP reiterates that the benefit of reservation should be extended to the minority institutions all over the country.

“It seems strange that those who talk of Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims are denying the benefit in their own institutions when, as per the Mandal formula, there are OBCs in these communities as well,” he said.

The BJP spokesman called for a government’s response on the ruling. “The party would like the government to formally respond to this judgement.”
