New Delhi : A Minister in India’s Northeastern state of Assam Thursday escaped unhurt in a blast that injured seven others.
A blast by an insurgent group at a market in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district today during a public meeting addressed by state?s Hill Areas Development Minister Minister H Khorsing Ingti, injured seven people, news agency Indo Asian News Service reported. The Minister, however, escaped unhurt, the news agency said, quoting an officer of the Assam Police.
The bomb was kept on a bicycle. The venue of the Minister’s meeting was 300 metres from the place of the blast, the officer said. The blast could be the handiwork of either the outlawed Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) or the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), the officer said. The KLNLF is a minor rebel group fighting for a ?homeland? for the majority Karbi tribe in Karbi Anglong district.
The ULFA is waging an insurgency since 1979 to create a “sovereign Assam ” carved out of India . Most of its top leadership is reported to be based in neighbouring Bangladesh and operating from there. The group has been alleged of maintaining links with Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence.
