French FM arrives in Afghanistan for talks on security

Kabul : French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner arrived in Afghanistan on Saturday for talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on various issues, with security and political topics on top.

The French minister is scheduled to meet his country’s troops who are stationed in Kabul as part of NATO’s peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan.

Officials at the Foreign Ministry here said the visiting dignitary will also pay a visit to the southern province of Kandahar. He will be accompanied by his Canadian counterpart, Maxime Bernier.

Most of the Canadian forces are presently stationed in Kandahar province.

Earlier, the French minister, during his stay in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, has pledged his country will send 3,000 more troops to Afghanistan to boost NATO’s efforts for restoration of peace there.
