During a meeting with Iraqi Vice President Tareq Al-Hashemi here, McGurk said the withdrawal would be followed by a 45-day assessment period in order to decide whether to carry on with the process or not, depending on security status.

He noted that should the withdrawal continues, it would be accomplished by withdrawing a brigade per month.

The meeting discussed also US Supreme Commander in Iraq General David Petraeus’s report to the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The report accused Iran of fueling the recent violence in Basra through the lethal support of the special groups.

It also described Tehran’s role in Iraq of being a “destructive” one.

Iraqi Premier Nouri Al-Maliki had earlier accused “regional powers” of attempting to destabilize Iraq by supporting armed militias in the violence-striven country.
