India came into this Test facing the possibility of slipping to fourth spot after South Africa won the second Test in Ahmedabad by an innings and 90 runs following a draw in the first Test in Chennai.

However, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma and Virender Sehwag shared 16 wickets between them while man-of-the-match Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman stroked half-centuries to script an eight-wicket victory in what was Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s first match as captain.

India successfully defended the position it claimed after its tour of Australia. South Africa climbed one place to third after Sri Lanka drew its series against the West Indies and dropped two places in the ranking ladder.

Australia still leads the table, 30 rating points ahead of second-placed India.
