Tamil Nadu to pay compensation to slain engineer’s widow

By IANS,

Thippanahalli (Tamil Nadu) : The Tamil Nadu government Sunday announced compensation for the family of an Indian engineer killed in Afghanistan Saturday.

Krishnagiri district collector Santosh Babu informed G. Sivakami, the widow of Govindasamy, that the state government was issuing her a compensation of Rs.200,000.

Babu offered his condolences to the 38-year-old Sivakami and her 14-year-old son Ganesh in their modest home here, 380 km from capital Chennai.

The Govindasamy’s three married daughters Aruna, Bharati and Prema sobbed inconsolably as Babu informed the grieving family that the slain engineer’s last rites would be performed Monday with full state honours.

The compensation cheque would be handed over after the funeral, Babu told reporters.

Two Indian engineers were killed and five others injured when two suicide bombers attacked their convoy in Nimroz province of southwestern Afghanistan Saturday morning. According to media reports, a Taliban spokesperson claimed responsibility for the attack.
