UAE to focus on sustainable development

By IANS,

Abu Dhabi : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) plans to strictly enforce environmental regulations to ensure sustainable development, the UAE environment minister has said.

Rashid Ahmed bin Fahd said Monday that the UAE had introduced a set of legislations to ward off negative effects of industrial growth on environment, WAM news agency reported Tuesday.

“Environmental regulations are needed to strike a balance between development requirements and environmental considerations,” the minister told a training workshop on environmental inspection held by the Federal Environment Agency in cooperation with UN regional office for West Asia.

He said that commitment to these regulations was below desired levels because of lack of well-trained manpower and absence of effective inspection systems in many parts in the country.

“In future, the focus will be on training more professionals to do inspection and follow up implementation of these regulations under the federal government strategy’s recommendation for enforcing the environmental impact assessment and inspection mechanisms,” he added.

Around 52 environmental inspectors from various federal and local environment agencies are taking part in the workshop.
