He made the comment when queried whether the lavish marriage party of party colleague and state Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s son on Sunday was in tune with the party document that was cleared at the 19th party conference in Coimbatore in March.

“At no cost will indulging in luxury by my party men be accepted,” said Balakrishnan.

Balakrishnan’s son’s marriage was held in grand style Sunday and a lavish party was thrown the previous night.

This issue first surfaced Tuesday when the Kerala unit of the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that a businessmen embroiled in a controversial land deal had hosted the marriage reception.

The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha president, K. Surendran, revealed that businessman Savy Mano Mathew, who is involved in the controversial Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) land deal, had hosted the April 12 reception.

Surendran also alleged that people from the underworld and known criminals attended the reception.

When asked about the allegation, Achuthanandan responded, “This is something that I am hearing for the first time.”

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the rivals of Balakrishnan are likely to raise the issue.

Balakrishnan was basking in glory after being selected to the party politburo at the Coimbatore party congress. He is likely to come under fire for the way in which he conducted the marriage of his son.
