Israeli Radio quoted army sources as saying that Israeli troops stationed at the crossing noticed three Palestinian gunmen approaching the area and opened fire at them.

The sources said that one militant was killed, and two were injured and arrested, adding that the three militants were planning to storm the crossing and carry out an armed attack into the area.

Palestinian paramedics said they picked up the body of a Palestinian young man from the area and took it to Rafah hospital in southern Gaza Strip.

Gaza Strip has been witnessing unprecedented armed escalation between Gaza militant groups and the Israeli army.

Twenty Palestinians, 18 from Gaza and two from West Bank, and three Israeli soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip over the past24 hours in various Israeli operations.

In response to the escalation, Islamic Jihad (Holy War) armed wing and other militant groups attacked southern Israeli towns with homemade rockets earlier on Thursday. Israel said the rockets caused no damages or casualties.
