“We reported on all of the KPU`s activities in relation with preparations for the 2009 general elections to the president. To date some 69 political parties have taken election forms and we want to clarify it later,” the KPU chairman said.

Concerning the problem of political parties that have a double leadership, Hafidz said the KPU had met with Law and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalata to solve it.

“We went to the Law and Human Rights Ministry yesterday and there we agreed that the legitimate party is the one which is registered with the ministry,” Hafidz said.

Meanwhile, Mattalata said he was not in a position to say whether or not a particular party with double leadership was legitimate but he would wait and see which one had been registered with his office.

Mattalata said his ministry was responsible for the verification of new political parties in regard to their legal status while the results of the verifications were to be submitted to the KPU.

“Therefore, the parties which are eligible to participate in next year`s general elections are those which have been verified by the KPU,” the minister said, adding that there were 24 new political parties.
