Federer confirmed his availability for the world team event to his website after dropping a hint earlier in the week at the Estoril Open here, where he reached the semi-finals Friday with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over local Frederico Gil.

Switzerland host Belgium in five months time with the winner moving into the top echelon of the team competition for 2009.

“I have decided that I will play the Davis Cup tie this September against Belgium,” Federer told his website.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to help Switzerland, along with my teammates, get back into the World Group for the 2009 season.

“I was so excited that the team was able to pull it out in Belarus last weekend and hope we can carry this momentum into the tie in September.”
