Cevese was part of a hunting team and was travelling in an open vehicle early Saturday when the accident took place.

The vehicle veered off the road and overturned when the driver tried to avoid an eland (an antelope) that crossed its path, the South African Press Association (SAPA) quoted police spokesperson Ronel Otto as saying.

Cevese died on the spot. The Limpopo police have opened a culpable homicide inquest.

Cevese, 57, was married with three children. He had been Italy’s envoy to South Africa, Lesotho, Mauritius and Madagascar.
