Heat wave kills 10 in Orissa, mercury up in north

New Delhi : Intense heat wave conditions killed 10 people in Orissa as the temperatures crossed the 42 degrees Celsius mark in the state. Most parts of the northern pains also experienced above-normal temperatures Sunday.

The maximum temperature in the national capital rose again to be around 38 degrees Celsius Sunday butr the minimum stayed at a comfortable 20 degrees.

The weather office in its bulletin said that most parts of the northern plains, central India and parts of Rajasthan and Maharashtra had temperatures 3-4 degrees Celsius above the normal.

The Met Office says that the mercury could rise further in the next three days till Wednesday. The highest temperature recorded was 43 degrees Celsius at Malegaon in Maharashtra.

At least 10 people have died of sunstroke in Orissa where the maximum temperature has crossed 42 degrees Celsius in parts of the state, an official said Sunday.

An official of the state revenue control room confirmed the deaths to IANS.

Jharsuguda town in western Orissa recorded the highest 43 degrees Celsius temperature Friday. The town witnessed 42.2 degrees Celsius Saturday.

The maximum temperatures recorded Saturday were in Bhubaneswar, 39.4 degrees Celsius, Cuttack 40.5, Chandbali 39.6, Keonjhar 40.2, Sambalpur 41.2 and Hirakud 41.0 degrees Celsius, he said.

The weather office said, “Scattered rain or thundershowers activity is likely to continue over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh during next 2-3 days (till Wednesday).”
