Kerala cops suspended for shifting stand on colleague’s death

By IANS,

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala government Monday suspended three police officials for making contradictory statements on death of a colleague, who was killed trying to control a mob of students at a college here in October last year.

The three suspended were Deputy Superintendent of Police P.P.B.Vijayan, and two additional sub-inspectors. The three were at the spot when Assistant Sub-Inspector M.C. Elias, 47, was killed as he intervened to restrain students at the Nair Service Society (NSS) Hindu college at Changanassery, about 130 km from here.

Elias tried to calm down student activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-affiliated Students Federation of India and Bharatiya Janata Party’s student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) as they clashed over student union elections Oct 18.

The officials had told their senior officers that they saw Elias being clubbed to death by a tall person.

However, early this month, they retracted their statements and said they do not know what happened during the police attempt to control the mob.

Following the retraction of the statements, Elias’ wife Suja demanded a federal probe into her husband’s death.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s office issued the order Monday suspending the three officials.

The police had arrested four people from the ABVP after the incident and the case against them is pending trial.
