Couple arrested for stabbing NRI 39 times

Ludhiana : A young couple was arrested from this industrial city in Punjab Wednesday for allegedly stabbing a non-resident Indian (NRI) 39 times earlier this week with the intention of looting him.

Britain-based NRI Jasmer Singh, 60, was stabbed at his own house in Gurmel Park here Sunday night. The Punjab police arrested Kamaljit Singh and his wife Manjit on suspicion of having murdered Jasmer Singh.

The police recovered 140 grams of gold, a mobile phone and other goods from the the couple when they were arrested from near an amusement park here.

The NRI, who had come to India with other family members in January, had stayed back even after his family returned to London last Friday.

Superintendent of Police S.S. Cheema said the couple were regular visitors to the NRI’s house and had planned to kill him to loot him.

They used a sharp-edged weapon to stab him 39 times in the chest and stomach and then tied his arms and legs with his own turban.
