Rahul leaves for Dhaka to study rural projects

By IANS,

New Delhi : Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Friday left for Dhaka to learn more about the poverty alleviation programmes and the micro-finance projects of the Grameen Bank there.

Rahul, who is on a five-day visit to the neighbouring country, will visit some rural development projects of the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Centre (BRAC) and the Grameen Bank, which was founded by Nobel Laureate Mohammed Yunus.

The Amethi MP was apparently impressed by the success of the micro finance initiative of Yunus, whom he met here last year. Yunus had invited both Rahul and his mother Congress president Sonia Gandhi to see for themselves how micro-credit institutions functioned in Bangladesh.

Rahul had earlier toured south Indian states – Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh – to see how self-help groups worked there.

Both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul have been promoting various micro-credit programmes in their constituencies Rae Bareli and Amethi respectively.
