By Xinhua,
Urumqi (China) : At least 16 policemen were killed and an equal number injured Monday when two suspected terrorists attacked a group of security personnel jogging through the street in western China’s Xinjiang province.
The two suspected terrorists drove a garbage lorry into the team of border patrol police jogging on the street in Kashi city and attacked them with knives killing 14 personnel and fatally wounding two.
They also threw crude explosives toward the barracks, causing explosion.
The police arrested the two attackers.
An earlier report had put the toll at 21 saying five attackers were gunned down by the police.
The regional public security department said it had got intelligence inputs that a terrorist outfit styled “East Turkistan Islamic Movement” (ETIM) planned to carry on subversions ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games starting Aug 8.
The police in March had foiled a subversion attempt by the terror group on board a Southern Airlines flight.
The ETIM, along with other separatist groups, as well as the Falun Gong cult are the main security worries of the Olympics organisers.
