The Gujarati Muslim Association of America (GMAA) has strongly denounced and expressed its outrage at the cowardly serial bombings in Bangalore and Ahmedabad which took the lives of at least fifty innocent persons and crippled hundreds of others.
GMAA offered its sincere condolences and firm allegiance to the families of the
victims, said a release from the organization.
This atrocity was undoubtedly the result of a planned crime against the country and it goes without saying that the individual or sect responsible did not have the authority to act on behalf of any particular cultural or religious group. This was a hate crime and its perpetrators cannot and will not be allowed to hide behind the cloak of communal affiliation, says the statement.
GMAA urged the Central Government of India and the authorities to undertake a comprehensive but transparent investigation of the matter and bring to justice any and all involved in these heinous murders. However, GMAA cautioned the Government and authorities against bowing to cultural or religious stereotypes and undermining the civil liberties of those innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigations should no doubt be thorough but should also avoid the detention or arrest of individuals based solely on religious affiliation and not on direct proof of involvement.
GMAA is non-profit organization based in Harvey, Illinois, USA, working on activities in social, economic and educational enlistment among the Gujarati Muslim community by providing scholarships and financial assistance, human services to needy Gujarati Muslims and a forum for discussion of the problems faced by Gujarati Muslims living in North America and India.
