Seoul : South Korean Presidential Office said Monday that a modern history museum is to be built in central Seoul to mark the 60th founding anniversary of the country.
According to the Presidential Office, the decision was announced by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak at a government meeting.
“I have great respect for the South Korean people’s brilliant and unprecedented achievement in economic modernization and democratization in the relatively short period of 60 years,” Lee was quoted by the Presidential Office as saying.
“My administration will build a modern history museum to help the next generation learn our history of miracles and feel proud of our nation,” the president told officials.
The museum will be built on a lot covering about 15,332 square meters in the current location of the culture ministry and a nearby public park, the Presidential Office said.
The president also approved a government plan to recreate a landmark street linking the gates of Gwanghwamun to Sungnyemun in central part of the city, the Presidential Office said.
South Korea, whose formal name is the Republic of Korea, was founded on Aug. 15, 1948.
