Patna : Two suspected thieves were lynched in Gaya and Aurangabad districts of Bihar, police sources said. Over two dozen lynching cases have been reported in the state since the beginning of the year.
A mob Monday lynched a suspected thief in Hamjapur village under Amas police station in Gaya district. The victim was identified as Nukul Paswan, a Dalit, resident of Chatra, a district bordering Jharkhand.
“Paswan was brutally beaten after he was caught allegedly trying to enter a house. He succumbed to internal injuries when brought to a government hospital by the police.” S.K. Suman, a police official said.
The police have lodged a case of murder against half a dozen unidentified villagers.
In another incident Monday in Aurangabad district, a suspected thief was beaten to death by a mob of villagers in Visambhar Bigha village under Daudnagar police station. The victim was not identified. “He was beaten to death with bamboo sticks after being caught by the mob,” police sources said.
In the last seven months, over two dozen cases of lynching have been reported across the state.
Over three dozen lynching incidents were reported last year and many more may have gone unreported, the police source said.
The worst lynching was reported in September last year when 10 men from the Keri community were beaten to death in Vaishali district on the suspicion that they were thieves. Later, a high-level probe found that the men were innocent.
