Abbas, Olmert to meet in Jerusalem on Wednesday

By NNN-KUNA,

Ramallah : President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas will meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday, as stated by the head of the PLO’s Negotiations Affairs Department, Saeb Erekat, here.

Erekat told “Voice of Palestine” radio station Monday that the meeting between the two top leaders would be held in Jerusalem, without making any hint at the topics to be discussed.

However, Palestinian sources said the meeting, that would take place at Olmert’s house, would address views that were tabled during the meeting of the Palestinian and Israeli negotiating teams in Washington with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Abbas met, three weeks ago, Israeli President Shimon Peres, where they agreed on the importance of reaching a peace agreement in order to offer a better life for future generations of the Palestinian and Israeli peoples.

The Palestinians basically aspire to establish an indepdent state, resolve the plight of Palestinians in diaspora and settle border demarcation issues with the Israelis.

It was planned that Abbas will meet Olmert the following day, but the meeting was indefinitely postponed in shadow of a bloody incident in Jerusalem where a Palestinian attacked Israelis with a bulldozer, injuring a number of them. He was shot dead by the Israeli police.

Olmert stated, few days ago, that he has no intention to stand for elections, for the leadership of his Kadima party, and that he was precoccupied, trying to prove his innocence of charges raised against him on corruption cases.
