Kolkata : Three leaders of West Bengal’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), including state general secretary Biman Bose, appeared before the Calcutta High Court Tuesday in connection with a contempt of court plea against them.
The division bench, comprising Chief Justice S.S Nijjar and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh, asked Bose as well as Central Committee members Shyamal Chakraborty and Binoy Konar to file an affidavit within eight weeks on why a contempt case should not be initiated against them.
The directives came on a petition filed by the High Court Bar Association, alleging that the three leaders had in a rally on Nov 27 last year denigrated the judiciary for a ruling on Nandigram in which the court had termed the March 14 police firing in Nandigram “unconstitutional”.
“Today was the date fixed for the personal appearance… The high court has asked the trio to file an affidavit in eight weeks explaining why a contempt case should not be initiated against them,” defence counsel lawyer and city mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya told reporters outside the court.
The next hearing of the case would be held Nov 14 later this year.
