Jammu : One person was killed and two injured when the police opened fire at protesters in a Jammu village Wednesday. With this, the death toll in more-than-a-month-long Amarnath land agitation has mounted to eight in this region of Jammu and Kashmir.
The police opened fire at the protesters in Palli Morh area in Kathua district, The agitators were demanding restoration of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), the governing board of the cave shrine in south Kashmir.
According to sources, the protesters tried to march towards Jammu-Pathankot National Highway when the police opened fire. One of the protesters died on the spot.
“One protester was killed and two wounded,” a police officials said.
The firing triggered huge protests in Kathua town and its surrounding areas.
Hindu groups in Jammu region have been demanding the restoration of 40 hectares of land that was allotted to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) – the governing body of the shrine in the Kashmir valley – before the order was withdrawn July 1.
Meanwhile the Jammu city, the winter capital of the state, remained comparatively calm Wednesday.
