Kabul : Several insurgents were killed in gun battles with Afghan police in the country’s southern and eastern regions, a press release issued by the Interior Ministry said Thursday.
Police in Kalal Salwagha area of Jalai district in southern Kandahar province launched a clean up operation Wednesday morning, killing eight rebels and wounding seven others, it said
No casualties inflicted on the police side, according to the press release.
Meantime, the governor of Paktika province, Mohammad Akram Khpalwak, told Xinhua that conflicts between Afghan security forces and Taliban insurgents in Barmal district on Wednesday left several rebels dead.
However, neither Taliban nor independent sources were available to make comment.
Afghanistan has witnessed the surge of Taliban attacks on international and Afghan troops during the past weeks when the anti-government militants continue to demonstrate their strength through suicide and roadside bombings.
Escalating insurgency and violent incidents have left more than2,500 people dead, including over 700 civilians. since January this year in the war-torn country.
