Nepal to elect PM on Friday

By Xinhua,

Kathmandu : Nepali Constituent Assembly on Monday fixed Aug. 15 (Friday) as the date for the elections of new prime minister of the country.

A meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) Task Management Committee held on Monday decided to elect the Prime Minister on Friday, according to local TV channel Kantipur.

According to electoral programs, the nominations for the Prime Minister are to be registered at the CA Secretariat on Thursday.

According to CA Speaker Subas Chandra Nemwang, the election will start on Friday at 11 a.m. (0515 GMT).

The CA meeting scheduled for later on Monday is due to ratify the committee’s decision.

On Sunday, President Ram Baran Yadav had called on the CA to take initiatives for forming a new government through vote since the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M), the single largest party in the CA, failed to form a new government based on national consensus.

Article 38 Clause 2 of the Interim Constitution states that prime minister would be elected through majority vote if political consensus could not be forged for the formation of government.

Earlier, CPN-M Chairman Prachanda has informed President Yadav that he was unable to assemble consensus and urged the President to move ahead other procedure for the formation of government.

President Yadav had given seven days on July 29 to CPN-M, the largest party of the CA, to form government under consensus and provided additional three days after expiry of the seven days.
