The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (RCPD) is the third of its kind, the other two being in Latin America and Africa.

It is being relocated to Kathmandu after functioning from the UN headquarters in New York for 20 years.

Though UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will not attend the inauguration, Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives from regional organisations and civil society are expected to be present at the event.

The centre, which will serve 43 countries in the Asia-Pacific, including members of SAARC and ASEAN, will undertake disarmament and security related projects and act as a forum for dialogue and cooperation among states in Asia and the Pacific.
