Mumbai : Niketa Mehta, the Mumbai housewife whose plea for aborting her 26-week-old foetus had been turned down by the Bombay High Court, has suffered a miscarriage.
Her husband Haresh Mehta, 35, said Niketa, 34, had been admitted briefly to a clinic after complaints of severe abdominal pain and there was a miscarriage Tuesday.
“I don’t want to go into the details. She is very weak and she has been advised complete bed rest for a month,” Haresh told IANS Thursday.
Last week, the court had dismissed the Mehtas’ petition seeking a medical termination of pregnancy on the grounds that the foetus had severe congenital deformities.
The court had sought two medical reports of her condition by a team of doctors of the state-run J.J. Hospital before dismissing the petition Aug 4.
Their plea had led to a raging debate on ethical and medical aspects of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1971, which bars abortion for a foetus more than 20 weeks old.
The couple had then said they were disappointed by the verdict.
Haresh Mehta blamed the media hype around their case for Niketa’s hypertension that led to the miscarriage.
