Moscow : Russia’s Deputy Chief of the General Staff Colonel General Anatoly Nogovitsyn said Saturday that it was “too soon” to talk about a date for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia.
In a press conference, he said that based on the Russian-French initiative, negotiations could be held over this issue with the participation of the international community.
He emphasized that the withdrawal of Russian peacekeeping forces from South Ossetia and Abkhazia was not being considered, adding that Moscow would not abdicate its peacekeeping role in the area.
Yesterday, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili had signed, in the presence of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a six-point peace plan, but said that his country would not make compromises regarding Georgia sovereignty over South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
The agreement was signed by Abkhazian President Sergei Bagapsh and his South Ossetian counterpart Eduard Kokoity at the Kremlin in Moscow three days ago, in the presence of Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev.
