The National Commission for De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes met Manmohan Singh and presented a report about their condition.

The Commission was constituted to study the socio-economic conditions of these tribes and recommend measures for their all round upliftment.

Manmohan Singh assured the panel of expeditious action on the recommendations, a Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) statement said.

While presenting the report, Commission chairman B.S. Renake briefly apprised the prime minister about the panel’s recommendations.

The recommendations broadly relate to the provision for their housing, education, skill development and creation of a permanent commission like the National Commission for Scheduled Castes.

Denotified tribes (DNTs) were originally listed under the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 as “addicted to the systematic commission of non-bailable offences”. However, after independence they were “denotified”.
