Bhiwani coach to get Rs.2.5 mn reward

Bhiwani/Chandigarh : The Haryana government Friday announced that Jagdish Singh, who coached Akhil Kumar, Vijender Kumar and Jitender Kumar for the Beijing Olympics, will be given a reward of Rs.2.5 million for producing world-class boxers.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said Jagdish Singh had worked hard to bring laurels to the country through these boxers.

“We have decided to honour him with a reward of Rs.25 lakh. He has done a lot for boxing in Haryana,” Hooda said.

Jagdish Singh has already been chosen for the Dronacharya award – the highest government award for sports coaches in the country.

Jagdish Singh and other boxing coaches have trained the boxers at their Bhiwani Boxing Club (BBC).

Hooda has said that Bhiwani will now have a full-fledged boxing academy to encourage other youngsters to take to the sport.

The Haryana government has announced a reward of Rs.5 mn for Vijender Kumar and Rs.2.5 mn each for Akhil Kumar and Jitender Kumar, both of whom reached the boxing quarterfinals in Beijing.
