As soon as the assembly met, the Congress members raised the issue and rushed into the well of the house raising slogans demanding the resignation of deputy speaker Prahallad Dora.

Assembly Speaker Kishore Kumar Mohanty first suspended the question hour and later adjourned the House till Monday.

“Dora has no right to continue as the deputy speaker”, Congress leader Satya Bhusan Sahu said.

He should resign immediately and allow an impartial probe into the allegations, Sahu said. “We will allow the house to run only after his resignation”.

Earlier, a police complaint was lodged against Dora and his son Chinmay Kumar for allegedly torturing Chinmay’s wife Smita Majhi, 26, for dowry. The son is also accused of bigamy, police said Friday.

Majhi hails from Jeypore town in Koraput district, about 520 km from here, and she married Chinmay July 9.

In a written complaint at the Jeypore police station Thursday, she alleged that soon after her marriage she realised that her husband was already married.

District Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar Chauhan told IANS that Majhi also claimed that when she complained to her in-laws about Chinmay being already married, they tortured her and demanded dowry.

A complaint has been registered against Chinmay, his parents and his sister.

The deputy speaker denied the allegations, saying it was a conspiracy against him and his family members.
