Merkel has already presented the initiative to French President Nicholas Sarkozy who holds currently the rotating European Union presidency.

The Georgian summit is to include countries like Armenia and Azerbaijan but not Russia.

Meanwhile, Germany plans also to assist in the reconstruction of Georgia and provide aid to thousands of Georgian war refugees, sources close to Merkel were cited as saying.

The move is aimed at showing solidarity with Georgia, it was said in Berlin.

Germany has faced tremendous pressure by the US and its East European allies like Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic states, to adopt a much more critical stance vis-a-vis Russia over the Georgian conflict.
