Sri Lankan ruling party takes early lead in local elections

Colombo : Sri Lanka’s ruling party the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has taken an early lead in the local government election results declared as at 07:00 a.m. local time (0130 GMT), the state radio said here on Sunday.

Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation said that the UPFA was heading for a clear-cut lead over its rival United National Party in the elections for North Central Provincial Council and Sabaragamuva Provincial Council.

The radio said the UPFA had secured win in the Polonnaruwa district in North Central Province which is one of the four districts in the two provinces.

The results of three more districts were yet to released but the radio said the government was clearly heading for a comprehensive victory in both provinces.

The two elections were called by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse 14 months ahead of the schedule to test the public mood on his current military campaign against Tamil Tiger rebels in the north and east of the country.
