Quoting witnesses, Dawn said that 30-35 men, some of them armed, set fire to the trailer when its driver and cleaner were having dinner at a nearby restaurant. The attackers also fired in the air.

However, a police officer told the newspaper that no firing took place.

The identity of the attackers was not known.

Addressing his followers on the telephone from London, where he lives in exile, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain had this month cautioned the people of Karachi against attempts to Talibanise the port city.

“The people of Sindh will never allow Karachi to become a Taliban-controlled city,” he declared, even as he cited instances which he said indicated that jehadi elements were trying to enforce Taliban-style Sharia in the city.
