Former Federal Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, leader of Pakistan Peoples Party-Sherpao (PPP-S), a splinter group of the main PPP party, at a press conference confirmed his party’s support to Asif Ali Zardari during the presidential elections in the best interest of the country.

His support came amid reports that Zardari is likely to withdraw from the contest in favor of the candidate of former coalition partner Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N).

However, his party has rejected the reports and said that he will take part in the elections. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday speaking at a Zardari support campaignin Karachi said that in order to ensure stability of the new democratic government it was necessary that president and prime minister should be from the same party, at least for one term.

He said that since the presidency was a symbol of national unity and cohesion, the president should be from the party which had roots in the four provinces.
