Ranchi : HIV positive cases have more than doubled in the last one year in Jharkhand, says the state’s AIDS control society.
At present, the HIV positive patients number 4,041 compared to around 1,900 last year, report released by the Jharkhand Aids Control Society (JACS) said Monday. Some 2.5 million Indians are HIV positive in the country.
The report said of the total HIV positive people, 60 percent are male and about 85 percent infected people were transmitted the disease due to unsafe sex.
The maximum number of HIV positive cases have been found in six districts of the state — Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Garwah and Sahebganj.
“In these six districts, we will start ‘Zindagi Zindabad’ campaign from December to create awareness among people,” said Pradeep Kumar, director of JACS.
“JACS also plans to set up red ribbon clubs in 100 colleges of the state to create awareness among the youth. We have also set up HIV testing equipment and counselling centres at 46 places in the state.”
