Singur (West Bengal) : West Bengal’s principal opposition party Trinamool Congress Tuesday decided to extend support to the Congress for the upcoming byelection from the Sujapur assembly constituency in Malda district.
“We’ll support the Congress candidate in Sujapur. Malda MP A.H. Khan Choudhury, who is the brother of late Congress leader A.B.A. Ghani Khan Choudhury, today requested me for my party’s support for their candidate,” Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said at a rally here.
However, she added this did not mean they were going into an electoral tie-up with the Congress.
“It’s limited to this seat only. It’s a mark of respect to Ghani Khan Choudhury,” she said.
Ghani Khan, a former union minister, was a very popular leader of Malda district and he had also represented Sujapur in the state assembly.
The seat has fallen vacant following the death of sitting legislator Rubi Noor of the Congress. The Congress has nominated her daughter Mousam Noor as its candidate in the by-poll.
