Over 13,000 trees illegally cut in Andhra Pradesh sanctuary

New Delhi : Encroachers have illegally cut 13,246 trees last year at the Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary of Andhra Pradesh and over 400 people have been arrested, the ministry of environment and forest said Thursday.

Fiftythree cases have been booked and 420 people arrested and remanded to judicial custody, it said in a statement.

“Local tribals have been engaged for the protection of the forests. Awareness campaigns have been organised for sensitising the villagers about the need for protecting forest and wildlife,” it said.

According to the state government, trees have been felled over an area of 399 hectares in the sanctuary, the ministry added.
