Arab League chief condemns attacks in Hebron, W. Bank

By KUNA,

Cairo : Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa on Saturday condemned aggressive acts committed by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the city of Hebron and other areas of the West Bank.

Moussa also condemned failure of Israeli forces to counter the settlers, noting that the League was monitoring reports of the attacks with “great concern”.

Warning of sever deterioration of the problem, Moussa said “such violations is a reminder once again that settlements are a major obstacle in the path of achieving any progress in the peace process.” As he called on the international community to swiftly move to provide protection for Palestinian people, Moussa also lauded the European Union’s step to hold up raising the level of relations with Israel until the latter lifts siege on Gaza and stops building settlements.

The Palestinian Authority yesterday asked for an emergency session for the UN Security Council in light of “vicious” attacks by Jewish settlers, whereas Israeli forces raised alert status and declared the West Bank a closed military zone.
