German FM to attend Afghanistan conference in Paris

Berlin : German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is to attend the international Afghanistan conference, scheduled to take place in Paris on Sunday.

The confab will feature political representatives of the Afghan government as well as its six neighboring states and India.

Other participants include the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the European Union, the United Nations, Germany and Italy.

A main objective of the Afghan conference is to boost regional cooperation aimed at pacifying the situation in Afghanistan, the German Foreign Ministry was quoted saying in a statement.

Political talks will also dwell on regional economic cooperation, combating terrorism and halting Afghan narco-trafficking.

Germany is the third largest troop provider after the US and Britain in the 53,000-strong NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

Berlin has deployed around 3,500 soldiers in northern Afghanistan and Kabul as part of ISAF in addition to police instructors and civilian reconstruction workers.

Some 30 German soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since January 2002, according to official statistics.
