47 killed in Egypt road accident

By Xinhua,

Cairo : Forty-seven people were killed and 10 others injured Sunday when the passenger bus they were travelling in plunged into a lake some 220 km south of the Egyptian capital, a media report said.

The coach, carrying around 70 passengers, was on its way from Cairo to Minya city at the time of the accident, the state-run MENA news agency reported.

The bus plunged into the Al-Ibrahimia Lake after the driver lost control of the vehicle, Minya Governor Ahmed Diaaeddin, said.

More than 20 ambulances rushed to shift the injured to the hospital, he added.

The toll may increase as some of the injured were in critical condition, the report said.

Some 6,000 people annually die in road accidents in Egypt mostly because of reckless driving and violations of traffic rules.

On Aug 1, Egyptian authorities implemented a new traffic law with tougher punishments for lawbreakers to reduce road accidents in the country.
