Kolkata : An undertrial prisoner escaped from a West Bengal jail by jumping the boundary wall, police said Friday.
The incident took place late Thursday night at a jail in West Bengal’s Howrah district.
“An undertrial prisoner Dilip Singh climbed a ladder, jumped off the boundary wall of Howrah jail and escaped. Another inmate Pankaj Jha also tried to escape but was caught,” Superintendent of Police N.K. Singh told reporters here.
He said the police had prior information that Dilip, a murder accused, might escape.
“Our intelligence alerted us some time back that Dilip might try to escape from jail and accordingly I had asked the concerned officers Nov 18 to arrange for heavy security round him.”
Singh said Dilip was planning to escape from the jail for the past 10 days.
“Dilip was planning this operation for the past 10 days. He even made a ladder with pieces of wood, bamboo and rugged clothes to climb the high boundary wall,” he said.
He said investigation has been initiated.
“We are investigating how Dilip could escape from jail amid tight security. The other inmate Jha and the guard who had the keys to Dilip’s cell are being questioned.”
Dilip, who was arrested in September for killing two people at a local bar, was to be produced in a Howrah court Friday.
