Bucharest : Romanian democrat liberal Roberta Anastase was elected on Friday evening the new Speaker of Chamber of Deputies. Romanian deputies voted on Friday to select the Chamber Speaker, a position in which three candidates had been proposed by parliament groups. Of the 313 validly expressed votes, Roberta Anastase obtained 218 pros, while liberal Ludovic Orban obtained 69 pros and Magyar minority party member Laszlo Borbely 26 pros. Born in 1976, Roberta Anastase was a member of the youth organization of the Democratic Party at the age of 15. She became widely known when she got the Miss Romania title in 1994. Graduated from the Faculty of Sociology at the University of Bucharest, Anastase had further studies at the Faculty of Political Science at the same university. She was vice-president of the Romania Youth Council since 2001, executive secretary of the permanent national office of the Democratic Party since 2003 and president of the Prahova Democratic Party organization since 2006. She was elected member of the European Parliament in 2007.
