Opposition charges Soren with poll code violation

Ranchi, Dec 22 (IANS) The opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Monday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission here regarding violation of the model code of conduct by Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren in the Tamar assembly by-election.

A delegation of NDA members including former chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arjun Munda, state BJP president P.N. Singh and state Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president Jaleshwar Mahto met Debashish Gupta, state chief electoral officer here Monday.

The NDA delegation handed over a complaint to Gupta and sought free and fair polling in Tamar assembly by-election scheduled Dec 29.

“The state government is letting off Maoist rebels to get mileage in the by-election. We lodged a complaint with the election commission to ensure free and fair election and stop misuse of state machinery,” Munda told reporters.

Soren became chief minister Aug 27 and he has to get elected to the state assembly before Feb 27.

NDA has fielded Basundhara Munda, wife of slain JD-U legislator Ramesh Singh Munda.

Ramesh Singh was killed by the Maoist rebels July this year.
